WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION OF ARAB JOURNALISTS (WAAJ) CONDEMNS EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT’S SHUT-DOWN OF AL- JAZEERA'S OFFICES AND ARRESTS OF IT'S JOURNALISTS.

Washington, D.C. -- On Sunday, 30 January 2011, Egypt’s Ministry of Information ordered Al-Jazeera Satellite Network to close its offices and cease operation. Its broadcast carried on Egypt’s provider NileSat was terminated later in the day. Our Cairo colleagues at the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC) Arabic were also told to shut down.

Today, 3 February 2011, the “new” government, however, inaugurated its term in office by arresting three  Al-Jazeera correspondents, moments prior to the “new” Prime Minister, Ahmad Shafik, held first public press conference.

WAAJ holds  the Egyptian Government responsible for those measures, to immediately release all journalists; restore its commitment to respecting freedom of the press; immediately halt all attacks targeting reporters and journalists; and rescind its orders to close media outlets, including Al-Jazeera.

Also, the U.S. Administration must do more than simply issue public statements urging the regime to respect freedom of the press. It must, once and for all, announce the end of its 30-year support for this dictatorship, and make clear that it supports the thunderous demand of the people of Egypt: that Mubarak must go. In this time of deep turmoil and unrest in Egyptian society it is imperative that voices from all sides be heard.

WAAJ was established in February 2000, in Washington DC, and represents accredited Arab and Arab-American journalists.

Arab Journalists in Washington in Solidarity with Egyptian Editor of “Al-Dustour

WASHINGTON, DC, October 12, 2010 – The Washington Association of Arab Journalists (WAAJ) expresses its strong condemnation of the forced resignation of its colleague, Ibrahim Issa, editor of the respected Egyptian journal, Al-Dustour. The new owners of the Al-Dustour promptly dismissed Mr. Issa due to his firm belief in the freedom of expression and independence when he refused to abide by the governmental policy of preventing any non-sanctioned views from publication.Mr. Issa’s stellar record of heading a most credible journalistic venue, attested by his friends and foes alike, prompted him to publish an article by the previous chair of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammad Al Baradei, to commemorate the October 1973 War; he refused calls to sanction Mr. Al-Baradei who is viewed by some as a political challenge to the status quo.The Washington Association of Arab Journalists (WAAJ) wish to express its full unconditional support and solidarity with Mr. Issa and his distinguished journal, and draws attention to the potential implications of threats to the continuity of independent press and expression in Egypt. WAAJ calls on the new owners of Al-Dustour to promptly reinstate Mr. Issa to his editor-in-chief post, and warns of any harmful measures targeting the current staff.WAAJ is an independent professional organization representing all the accredited Arab journalists in Washington, DC. # # #

Statement of Reporters without Borders on Ibrahim Issa's dismissal as editor of the Egyptian leading daily Al-Dostour

Newspaper editor fired, TV programmers closed in run-up to legislative and presidential electionsReporters Without Borders deplores Ibrahim Issa’s dismissal as editor of the leading daily Al-Dostour for insisting on publishing an op-ed piece by Mohamed El-Baradei, the former director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency and potential opposition candidate in next year’s presidential election. His firing has coincided with the end of Baladna bel Masry, a current affairs programmer that he hosted on a privately-owned TV station. No reason has been given for the decision to take it off the air.Reporters without Borders is concerned at the possibility of a return to tighter control over the media in the run-up to next month’s parliamentary elections and the presidential elections scheduled for 2011. Freedom of expression and publication is fundamental, especially in a pre-electoral period.Issa was told on 4 October that he was being by dismissed by Al-Dostour’s new publisher, El-Sayed El-Badawi, over El-Baradei’s proposed article, which was pegged to the anniversary of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war. The publisher, who heads the moderate opposition party Al-Wafd, had vetoed the article to avoid provoking the country’s military and political leaders.Journalists at Al-Dostour immediately went on strike in protest at the injustice of Issa’s dismissal. El-Baradei’s article has meanwhile been posted online (http://dostor.org/).Another popular current affairs programmer, Al-Qahira Al-Yom, was dropped by the privately-owned satellite TV station Orbit TV at the end of last month. Like Baladna bel Masry, it focused on political and social issues but Orbit TV insisted that it was taken off the air for losing money. Media Production City, the production company that made it, reportedly rejected a proposal for deferring payment of the money it is owed.Always an outspoken journalist, Issa was sentenced to two months in prison in 2008 for “insulting” President Hosni Mubarak by the referring to the octogenarian leader’s health in his programmer. Thanks to a presidential pardon, he did not have to serve the sentence.
